John Beechey CBE
John Beechey CBE is among the best known arbitrators in the world. He has served as chairman, party-appointed arbitrator, or sole arbitrator on international arbitral tribunals in both 'ad hoc' (including UNCITRAL) and institutional arbitrations under the Rules of, inter alia, the European Development Fund (EDF), International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), International Centre for Dispute Resolution/ American Arbitration Association (ICDR/AAA), International Center for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) and the Stockholm Chamber. He is a past President of the International Court of Arbitration of the ICC (2009-2015). His term of office is regarded as one, which brought about significant reform to, and the reinvigoration of, the ICC Court. He had previously served on the Executive Board of the AAA in New York and as a Vice-President and member of the Board of the LCIA. Before his retirement from private practice in the City of London, he was the founding partner and Head of the highly-regarded International Arbitration Group of Clifford-Turner (subsequently, Clifford Chance LLP) (1983-2008). He is the President of the ICC UK’s Committee for Arbitration and ADR and a member of the Governing Body of ICC UK, the Chairman of the Board of the BVI International Arbitration Centre, a member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration, a Council member of the ICC Institute of World Business Law, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a member of the Investment Advisory Panel of Woodsford Litigation Funding, a member of the Council of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA) and a member of the Council of Arbitration of the Mumbai Centre for International Arbitration (MCIA). He participated in the ground-breaking IBA working groups responsible for the Rules on the Taking of Evidence in International Commercial Arbitration and the Conflicts of Interest Guidelines. John was also an Observer (initially, for the AAA and latterly for the ICC) at the UNCITRAL Working Group. He contributed to the revision of the UNCITRAL Model Law and the UNCITRAL Rules of Arbitration. He is an occasional lecturer at the Universities of Columbia in New York, Oxford, Milan, Munich and Vienna and at the Max-Planck Institute in Luxembourg. He is in demand as a panelist at international arbitration conferences and as an arbitrator at the Willem C Vis Moot. In June 2016, John was appointed CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to international arbitration.

João Vilhena Valério
João Vilhena Valério has focused his practice in the field of international arbitration, acting as counsel and as arbitral secretary. He acts as secretary to tribunals before, inter alia, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) and the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC). Prior to co-founding BeecheyArbitration, João was Legal Counsel at the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague, where he provided legal and administrative support to arbitral tribunals and parties in proceedings administered by the PCA concerning English, Spanish and Portuguese BIT- and contract-based investment arbitrations. He also provided legal assistance in appointing authority matters, promoted the PCA in Lusophone jurisdictions, and represented the PCA at conferences and meetings. Between 2007 and 2013, he worked at Uría Menéndez (subsequently, Uría Menéndez-Proença de Carvalho), principally focusing on dispute resolution matters, involving both public and private parties, in which the firm was engaged as counsel. He is a member of the Portuguese Bar, as well as of the International Bar Association (IBA), the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA), the Spanish Arbitration Club (CEA) and the Portuguese Arbitration Association (APA). He has published several articles and spoken at conferences on international arbitration, as well as having participated as an arbitrator in different Moot Competitions.
